Liverpool’s Title Dream Nears Reality After Dominant Win Over City

Last Updated on February 24, 2025

With a dominant 2-0 victory over Manchester City, Liverpool took a giant stride toward winning the Premier League title. The Egyptian Mohamed Salah stole the show, opening the scoring and then setting up Dominik Szoboszlai for a second.

Liverpool are now 11 points clear at the top with 64 points, with second-place Arsenal on still a game in hand. As for City’s title defense, that has fallen apart completely — they sit in fourth, 20 points off the pace, having now turned their attention to finishing high enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Salah once again proved why he’s one of the best in the world, netting his 25th goal of the season with a powerful strike that took a deflection off Nathan Ake.

Szoboszlai then took advantage of City’s defensive misalignment, scoring with an easy finish after a masterful set up from Salah. The atmosphere inside the Etihad soon turned miserable with City fans heading for the exits long before the final whistle.

Here we go, Liverpool fans chanted loudly — “We’re going to win the league” — as Liverpool’s rain-soaked supporters watched, a fitting moment for a night that all but put a stamp on the club’s title ambitions.

City dominated the possession around 66%  without their top talisman, Erling Haaland, but they struggled to penetrate the walls of a well-organized Liverpool. They had more shots on target (five compared to Liverpool’s four), but key moments didn’t go their way, including an Omar Marmoush goal that was disallowed.

Also for Liverpool, Curtis Jones thought he had scored before VAR ruled him offside. The victory gave Liverpool its first league double over City since the 2015-16 season and helped underline its dominance.

City will aim to respond when they visit Tottenham and Nottingham Forest before facing Brighton at home, but Liverpool will already be preparing for their own next test against Newcastle – knowing that they are one step closer to the ultimate Premier League prize.
