Van Persie’s Feyenoord Era Begins with Disappointing Home Draw vs. NEC

Last Updated on March 3, 2025

Robin van Persie had a disappointing start as Feyenoord’s head coach, as his team was held to a goalless draw at home against NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie on Saturday. The 41-year-old was appointed last weekend following the sacking of Brian Priske. Van Persie, who began and ended his playing career at Feyenoord, received a warm welcome at De Kuip, where he had previously coached the youth team before taking his first senior coaching job at Heerenveen.

The draw kept Feyenoord in fourth place, missing an opportunity to overtake Utrecht for third. Meanwhile, reigning champions PSV Eindhoven suffered a shock defeat to Go Ahead Eagles, giving Ajax a chance to extend their lead at the top of the table if they win against Almere City on Sunday. Feyenoord fans had high hopes for Van Persie’s debut, but his return to the club hasn’t started on the best note.

Now, Feyenoord shifts focus to their Champions League last-16 clash against Inter Milan, with the first leg set for Wednesday. In the Eredivisie, their upcoming fixtures include FC Twente away on March 16, followed by home games against FC Volendam on March 30 and FC Groningen on April 2. Meanwhile, NEC Nijmegen will take on Go Ahead Eagles, FC Utrecht, and AZ in their next league matches.
