NEC Nijmegen finally lost after 10 straight games without defeat

It had been a long time since NEC Nijmegen finished a Eredivisie game on the losing side. But Wednesday’s home match to FC Utrecht saw the end of their unbeaten run of 10 games as the match finished 3-1.

FC Utrecht were quickest out of the blocks, and went 1-0 up when Ángel Alarcón netted in the fifth minute on a pass from Gjivai Zechiël.

In the 45th minute Gjivai Zechiël increased the lead for FC Utrecht with an assist by Artem Stepanov.

Straight after the break, Yoann Cathline scored and increased the team’s lead.

With 59 minutes on the clock, NEC Nijmegen’s Darko Nejasmic found the net following a Eli Dasa assist to pull one back for NEC Nijmegen.

It was the first victory for Utrecht after a nine-game winless run.

It leaves FC Utrecht in 10th place and that NEC Nijmegen are in third place.

The next Eredivisie games for NEC Nijmegen are Sparta Rotterdam (away) on 15 February, Ajax (away) on 21 February and Fortuna Sittard (home) on 28 February. FC Utrecht play FC Groningen (away) on 14 February, PEC Zwolle (home) on 22 February and AZ (home) on 1 March.
