Hosts Fight Back to Draw 1–1 against Switzerland; Hungary Grab Last-Gasp Winner Over Scotland

Switzerland 1 – 1 Germany

Germany secured the top spot in Group A with a last-ditch 1-1 draw against Switzerland in the final matchday. Although both teams had already claimed their qualification to the round of 16, there still was something to fight for. Niclas Füllkrug scored the equalizing goal for the Germans in stoppage time after the Swiss had scored the first goal in the first half courtesy of Dan Ndoye.

The host team controlled the ball most of the game and had more chances to score, but they were surprised by a goal from Ndoye. Germany even had a goal called back because of a foul, and the ref didn’t agree with them on a few penalty calls. But right before the end, Füllkrug got a great cross from Raum and headed the ball in for a tie.

The draw helps Germany keep their unbeaten performance with seven games in total and the momentum going into the next stages. For Switzerland, after this match, they also qualified for the next round and finished second behind their opponents.

Scotland 0 – 1 Hungary

Hungary took a last-gasp 1-0 win over Scotland in a thrilling finale to their group-stage campaign at the European Championship. Hungary’s win has placed the team in the running for a place in the knockout phase, with Scotland’s dream in tatters.

The game was tense and lived up to its billed fixture. Scotland started off in control of the ball, even though they could not control it for long, and they could not find the final ball after having the breeze in their favor in the opening period.

As the game wore on, Hungary looked the likelier team to take the lead through count-attacks and setpieces. The game was called off in the second half after Hungarian player Barnabás Varga appeared to have suffered a serious injury. Scotland calmly waited for their opportunity on the break, even shouting for a penalty in the 79th minute.

At the end of the game, right before the draw, Hungary scored the winning goal in the 100th minute of the game. Having won the corner, Scotland failed to convert the moment into a goal and Hungary quickly counterattacked, giving a remarkable pass to Kevin Csoboth who scored a crucial goal.
