Arsenal booked their spot in the Champions League last-16 with an impressive 3-0 win at home against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. Thanks to the new format, they’ve bypassed the first knockout round and finished as one of the top eight teams.
The Gunners wasted no time getting on the scoreboard—just more than a minute in, Declan Rice found the back of the net. It all started with Gabriel Martinelli whipping in a low cross, which Kai Havertz neatly cushioned into Rice’s path. Rice never fluffed his lines, crashing the ball between four defenders from 12 yards out.
Martinelli and Havertz linked up again in the 66th minute. This time, Martinelli delivered another quality cross, and Havertz went for it himself, successfully finding the net to double the lead, 2-0.
Arsenal has been in fine form in Europe. After a 2-2 draw with Atalanta to kick off their campaign in September, they’ve won five of their next six games, with their only loss coming against Inter Milan.
The Gunners have been rock solid at the back too, conceding just two goals across seven matches against some of Europe’s top teams. With just one game left, Arsenal currently sit in third place on the table, while Dinamo Zagreb are down in 26th.
Arsenal’s next Champions League match is an away game against Girona on January 29. On the same day, Dinamo Zagreb will host Milan at home.
