Genoa made it back-to-back home wins for the first time since May with a convincing 2-0 win over bottom-placed Monza in Serie A. After a slow opening quarter of an hour, Monza’s Georgios Kyriakopoulos tried his luck with a deflected effort that went just wide of the far post.
Genoa, who had found it hard to find the net in previous matches, were frustrated early on by Monza’s defense. Stefano Turati saved two big chances from Andrea Pinamonti, including a penalty. However, both teams were unable to find the net before halftime.
Genoa piled on the pressure in the second half and came close through Fabio Miretti before Morten Thorsby forced a second save from Turati, this time from a header. Koni De Winter finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, getting on the end of Aaron Martin’s free-kick with a header.
Monza was at risk of succumbing to an eighth loss in nine outings and found it hard to muster any kind of response. But Genoa kept at it and Johan Vasquez capped it all off with a header from Maxwel Cornet’s cross in the dying minutes.
Genoa continue their solid defensive display on this win, as they have picked 6 clean sheets in their last 9 games. At the other end, Monza continued to crash, suffering their fifth straight away loss — their worst since 2011 when they were in Serie C.
The busy February continues for Genoa as they clash against Fiorentina on February 2nd, Torino on February 9th, and at home against Venezia on February 16th. At the same time, Monza’s schedule in February sees them facing Hellas Verona on the 1st, Lazio on the 9th, and a home fixture with Lecce on the 16th.
