In a strong first-half showing, Fiorentina beat Lazio 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, handing the hosts just their second home defeat of this campaign. It was also a crucial result in Fiorentina’s sprint for the top-four, as well as marking the first time win since 2012/13 that they managed a head-to-head double over Lazio.
Fiorentina were in dire need of a victory after six games in Serie A this season, and they could hardly have hoped for a better start. Only 11 minutes had passed when Adam Marušić conceded possession in a dangerous area, and Robin Gosens assisted Yacine Adli, who took his time to volley low into the corner.
Six minutes later, Fiorentina had a rapid move down the right. Marco Dodo — overlapping as ever — swept up the left and crossed perfectly for Lucas Beltrán, who powered a header past Ivan Provedel to double the lead. A stunning volley from Albert Guðmundsson came close to a 3-0, hitting the post.
The second half was completely one-way as Lazio pounded away at Fiorentina’s defensive wall. The visitors occasionally looked shaky, but Lazio struggled to create clear opportunities, their final pass repeatedly lacking. In the last 30 minutes, it did turn heated up— particularly after Adli was placed from the game for his red card after coming on.
Lazio’s finishing continued to linger despite the man advantage. Lazio was met with no small amount of frustration, however, as Fiorentina’s resistance solidified late on, with the visitors blocking everything in front of them.
The home side finally broke the deadlock deep into stoppage time when Marušić scrambled the ball over the line from close range to set up a nervy finish. Fiorentina clung on for a massive win despite Mario Gila nearly bringing them level with a long-range strike that came back off the post.
Fiorentina climb to sixth in the table with this victory and earn their first clean sheet away from home in Serie A since November. Lazio was coming off qualification for the UEFA Europa League last 16 and will be disappointed to see this match end the week on a low note. They remain in fourth place.
