There was no real shape to the match until Everton took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who netted, with an assist by James Garner, making it 1-0.
Manchester United play Crystal Palace on 30 November, West Ham United on 4 December and Wolverhampton Wanderers (away) on 8 December. Everton’s next opponents are Newcastle United on 29 November, AFC Bournemouth on 2 December and Nottingham Forest (home) on 6 December.
Everton were left with a man down early on, when Idrissa Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute.
