In the recent match in the UEFA Champions League, Atalanta dominated its way through for a thumping 5-0 victory over Sturm Graz. They never hesitated in taking command of the match early enough as in the 12th minute when Mateo Retegui placed his team on the leadline through a precise finish assisted by Davide Zappacosta, forcing the opponents on their back right from the kickoff.
Atalanta’s momentum remained strong, and their lead was doubled when, in the 58th minute, Mario Pašalić converted a fine pass from Juan Cuadrado. Sturm Graz could not quite counter Atalanta’s attack, and within the final thirty minutes of the game, Isak Hien put Charles De Ketelaere through for Atalanta’s third goal, which basically sealed the result.
As the game entered stoppage time, Atalanta didn’t slow down. Marco Brescianini stretched the lead further, converting a move initiated by Ademola Lookman into a 4-0 finish. A minute later, Lookman himself was on the scoresheet, with a late goal that was assisted by De Ketelaere, to cap off an excellent performance and complete the five-goal rout.
With such a resounding victory, the team of Atalanta has improved their position in the tournament; meanwhile, Sturm Graz now occupies the last place. It is not going to be easy, though, when on 29 January Atalanta will play against FC Barcelona and Sturm Graz will face RB Leipzig on the same day.
