The first half saw Villarreal seize control of their La Liga home fixture against Valencia, establishing a crucial 2-1 lead that persisted unchallenged through a second half devoid of goals.
In the 27th minute, Largie Ramazani scored to give Valencia a 1-0 lead in what had been a goalless match.
Villarreal equalised to make it 1-1 after more than half an hour’s play as Santi Comesaña netted.
Villarreal took the lead just before the half-time whistle as Pape Gueye made his mark with a penalty to complete Villarreal’s come back. The teams were unable to score in the second half and the game ended with a 2-1 win for Villarreal.
Villarreal remains in third place and Valencia is in 16th.
Villarreal play FC Barcelona on 28 February, Elche on 8 March and Deportivo Alavés (away) on 13 March. Valencia’s next opponents are Osasuna on 1 March, Deportivo Alavés on 8 March and Real Oviedo (away) on 14 March.
