The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad or Paris 2024, are set to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, with some events beginning a bit earlier on July 24.
Paris will be the main host city, but competitions will also occur across 16 other locations in Metropolitan France and on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Paris was awarded the honor of hosting these Games in September 2017, after a long selection process that saw it and Los Angeles as the final contenders.
This will mark Paris's third time hosting the Summer Olympics, making it the second city ever to do so after London.

Medal Production and Design Collaborations
In February 2024, Tony Estanguet, the president of Paris 2024, presented the Olympic and Paralympic medals for the Games. The front of the medals showed a hexagon-shaped token which was made from a piece of scrap iron taken from the Eiffel Tower. The medals also featured the logo of the Games engraved.
The medals were produced by the French mint, Monnaie de Paris, and designed by the luxury jewelry firm Chaumet. Around 5,084 medals in total were made. The back of the medals showed Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, inside the Panathenaic Stadium. In the background, the Parthenon was displayed on the left, and the Eiffel Tower on the right.
Tightened Security Measures Ahead of Paris Games
To prepare for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Security France, in cooperation with Europol and the UK Home Office, has been working on enhancing security measures and international law enforcement cooperation. As part of this arrangement, in order to prevent any illegal flow across the English Channel, additional drones and sea barriers will be deployed.
To enhance air security, the British Army will allocate Starstreak surface-to-air missile units. The Parisian police have been conducting a series of drills and bomb disposal exercises, similar to the ones held before the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
In order to assist in Olympic security, and as part of agreements between Qatar and France, the Polish security troops and sniffer dog handlers will be dispatched to Paris.
The details will be refined during the course of high-level meetings, which will be organized by the Qatari Minister of Interior. Due to security concerns, the opening ceremony along the Seine will no longer be open to the public but become an invitation-only event.
Therefore, the expected number of visitors will be reduced from 600,000 to slightly more than 300,000. In light of the recent threats and attacks allegedly organized by the Islamic State, in the worst-case scenario, if President Macron deems it necessary, there will be further reductions or relocation of the ceremony.
10,000 Hands to Carry Olympic Flame
The Olympic torch relay started with the lighting of the Olympic flame on April 16 in Olympia, Greece, exactly 100 days before the game. Greek rower Stefanos N’touskos is the first who takes pride in carrying the torch, followed by French swimmer Laure Manaudou.
Besides, Laure Manaudou will also act as one of the four captains of the torch relay, joined by her brother — the swimmer Florent Manaudou, paratriathlete Mona Francis, and para-athlete Dimitri Pavadé.
This will make a massive route for the relay, with 10,000 bearers to pass through over 400 sites in 65 French territories, six of which are overseas. The only exception will be New Caledonia after events only increased in violence there on May 18.
The Opening Ceremony
