Manchester United v Everton
Sixth placed Man Utd host sixteenth placed Everton in the first match of the gameweek. Man Utd have suffered back to back losses in the league, first against Fulham at home a fortnight ago, and then away to their rivals Manchester City last weekend. Whilst they are still in with a shout of silverware via the FA Cup, they will want to get their season back on track. Everton’s last league win came in mid December, and whilst they have become quite adept at grinding out draws of late, seven times in the last nine game, they’ll be underdogs to get anything at Old Trafford where they haven’t won in over 10 years.
Bournemouth v Sheffield United
Bournemouth climbed into thirteenth place with a win against Burnley last week and they take on two of the other promoted teams in the next week starting with bottom side Sheffield United. Their away win did wonders to ease any threat of relegation and end a six match run without victory. Sheffield United look destined to drop back down to the Championship; their form this season has been dreadful, and their record of having conceded 72 goals already this season after 27 games could see them become the worst defensive side in the history of the Premier League
Crystal Palace v Luton
Palace followed up a 3-0 home with against Burnley with a 1-3 away defeat to Tottenham last weekend, where Spurs capitalized on some defensive errors to pick up all three points. The fourteenth placed side should not be too worried about being dragged into a relegation fight this season, but a win here would do wonders towards their confidence under their new manager. Luton are four points away from safety and have lost their last 5 matches in all competitions, but they have been holding their own; against the likes of Aston Villa and Man Utd in recent weeks, they lost by just a single goal.
Wolves v Fulham
Wolves ended a three match winning streak with defeat last weekend at St James Park, a result that dropped them down to tenth place in the league. They have won their last two home games by a single goal, and still have an FA Cup quarter final against Coventry City to look forward to next weekend. Fulham have won three of their last four league games and are in very good form, including a 3-0 win against Brighton last weekend, which moved them up to twelfth spot, and they can be confident of continuing that form this weekend.
Arsenal v Brentford
With the two clubs above them facing off this weekend, Arsenal have a great chance to close the gap at the top, but they have to beat local rivals Brentford first. The Gunners have won their last seven games in the league by an aggregate score of 31-3 and it appears little can stop them from marching onto another win this weekend. Brentford have won just once in their last seven games but they did manage to end a run of three straight league losses with a 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea last weekend. That run of defeats also included matches against Liverpool and Man City.
Aston Villa v Tottenham
Five points separate fourth placed Aston Villa with fifth placed Tottenham, and this promises to be a hugely important match in determining the race for the Champions League football. With 10 wins from 13 home games this season, few have managed to record any kind of success at Villa Park; they’ve won their last three league games and also managed a respectable 0-0 draw away to Ajax in the UEFA Conference League in midweek. Tottenham won 3-1 at home to Crystal Palace last weekend and will be the fitter of the two teams, and could record back to back wins in the league, and an away league win, for the first time since December.
Brighton v Nottingham Forest
Brighton’s poor form have seen them drop into ninth spot in the league, and their midweek 0-4 defeat at Roma was a third straight loss for them in all competitions, dumping them out of the FA Cup and (effectively) the Europa League in one single week. Forest are also in poor form, they are 4 points above the drop zone and have lost their last three in all competitions including two last minute goals in 0-1 defeats. They also have a likely points deduction looming, and the skys are greying over Nottingham.
West Ham v Burnley
Back to back league victories have seen West Ham move up to seventh place and they have a good chance of extending that run as they take on relegation threatened Burnley. The Hammers lost in Germany in midweek in a 0-1 defeat to Freiburg in the Europa League but should quietly confident of victory. Burnley are second bottom, 11 points from safety with only 11 games left of the season, and with only 2 points gained from a possible 27 since Christmas, they’re really going to need to start delivering if they are to escape the drop.
Liverpool v Manchester City
First meets second in a mouthwatering clash at the top of the table. Liverpool have won 14 of their last 16 games, Man City have won 16 of their last 17, and these two titans are ready to do battle. Both were in action in midweek too; Liverpool won 5-1 at Sparta Prague in their first leg match, whilst Man City defeated FC Copenhagen in the second leg of their tie. Liverpool should also be welcoming back some players who have been missing through injury like Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, and it promises to be an amazing clash at Anfield.
Chelsea v Newcastle
Both these sides have been underperforming this season as eleventh placed Chelsea host eighth placed Newcastle. Chelsea have been faring well in cup competitions this year; they lost in the final of the League Cup, and are in the quarter finals of the FA Cup, but in the league, they’re faltering. Newcastle bounced back from a disappointing loss to Arsenal a fortnight ago to defeat Wolves 3-0 last weekend, but with 8 away losses this season, they will be cautious.
