Saturday Football Roundup: Coventry in Action in Epic FA Cup Clash and Relegation Battle in the Premier League

It was a great weekend of English football; in particular, Wolves and Coventry played out a truly epic Quarter Final tie in the FA Cup at Molineux, whilst there were some big results at the foot of the Premier League with Burnley, Brentford, Luton and Nottingham Forest all in action.

FA Cup: Wolves 2-3 Coventry

In an incredible FA Cup Quarter Final, Coventry City staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2. After leading 1-0 until the 83rd minute, Coventry conceded two quick goals to Wolves. However, they didn’t give up, scoring twice in stoppage time. First, Ellis Simms equalized with a volley, then in the dying seconds, Haji Wright secured the win with a brilliant first-time finish, sending Coventry back to Wembley for the first time since 1987 for the semi-finals

FA Cup: Man City 2-0 Newcastle

Manchester prevailed over Newcastle 2-0 to go to the FA Cup semi-finals. Even though Bernardo Silva’s two goals had been the result of some fortunate deflections, Manchester dominated the game from the outset, controlling possession with a commanding 75% edge. Newcastle barely put up much of a fight, and Manchester City’s goalie, Ortega, denied them their best opportunity in the first half through Isak. With this victory, Manchester City maintains their chances of winning a historic treble, while Newcastle are left feeling disappointed and under pressure to avoid a disappointing season finale.

EPL: Burnley 2-1 Brentford

With a tight 2-1 victory over Brentford at Turf Moor in a relegation six pointer, Burnley moved one step closer towards unlikely survival. Burnley took the lead to a contentious early penalty that was converted by Jacob Bruun Larsen following Sergio Reguilon of Brentford’s red card. David Datro Fofana wasted a fantastic opportunity, but he subsequently made amends with a goal of his own. Even after Kristoffer Ajer’s late header and Brentford’s goal that was disallowed in stoppage time, Burnley managed to hold on for the victory. With this win, Burnley’s chances of making it out of the basement rose slightly, but Brentford are dropping alarmingly close to that drop zone.

EPL: Luton 1-1 Nottingham Forest

In the Premier League, Luton Town secured a late goal to earn a vital 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. Chris Wood gave Forest the lead in the first half at Kenilworth Road, but Luke Berry, a late substitute, handed Luton a crucial point. Despite a solid first-half showing, Forest couldn’t see off the match, but they do remain three points clear of Luton in seventeenth place. With both teams having a few weeks off due to the international break, it will be a great chance to regroup and refocus on a daunting final set of games in the league.

EPL: Fulham 3 – 0 Tottenham

Fulham gave a crushing blow to Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of finishing in the Premier League’s top four. In-form striker Rodrigo Muniz’s two goals secured a convincing 3-0 victory for Fulham at Craven Cottage. Tottenham, needing a win to climb above Aston Villa into fourth place, started slowly and gave little going forward. Muniz began the scoring shortly before halftime and doubled it after the interval. Sasa Lukic’s goal in between sealed Fulham’s lead. This win marks a significant achievement for Fulham, who move into twelfth place, and with a sixteen point cushion having opened up between themselves and the drop zone, they have surely done enough to avoid the drop this season.
