The game opened in fits and starts, as neither team could find the rhythm to advance, and there were no shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. But in the 15th minute, Heidenheim’s Patrick Mainka produced a crucial tackle to prevent Mainz from taking the lead, and that kept the scores tied at 0–0 and set the scene for what was to follow. And although Heidenheim enjoyed more possession in the early going, it was Mainz who made the breakthrough.
After a near-miss in the 27th minute, Jonathan Burkhardt finally opened the scoring in the 28th, securing his 13th goal of the season and putting Mainz ahead 1-0. Heidenheim’s confidence took a hit after that, and as the first half ended, Mainz had a higher expected goals (xG) value.
Heidenheim made two substitutions at halftime, hoping to get back into the match, but Mainz quickly doubled their lead. Burkhardt, with both a goal and an assist to his name, set up Nelson Weiper in the 51st minute for a 2-0 lead.
Heidenheim had a couple of chances after that, with Honsak’s long-range shot in the 53rd minute and Weiper almost scoring again in the 67th minute. Mainz’s defense was rock solid, with goalkeeper Robin Zentner stepping up in the final moments to make a crucial save against Heidenheim’s Pieringer, keeping the clean sheet intact and securing a 2-0 victory for Mainz.
And also looking forward, Heidenheim have a difficult path, facing RB Leipzig on February 23, a home game against themselves on March 1 and, an away game to TSG Hoffenheim on March 9. As for Mainz, it will host St. Pauli at home on Feb 22, travel to RB Leipzig on March 1 and face Borussia Mönchengladbach away on March 7.
