Leon Bailey scored a late winner as Aston Villa beat Leicester City 2-1 after a breathless second period where both sides had chances to claim all three points at Villa Park on Saturday. It was a game of two halves, with Leicester on top in the first until the second half came to life.
Ross Barkley netted the opener shortly after the hour mark, pouncing on a deflected shot to unleash a strike from just outside the area. But Leicester immediately woke-up though.
Emiliano Martínez made a sharp save denying Jamie Vardy only for the rebound to fall to Stephy Mavididi, who tucked home the equalizer from near the goal. It seemed the game was heading for a draw, but Bailey had other plans. Villa’s goal scorer was Jacob Ramsey, who scored a well-deserved winner in the 76th minute after some clever play from Ian Maatsen, who found Bailey.
Villa came close to breaking the deadlock when Ollie Watkins was found in the box by Matty Cash, but Conor Coady’s crucial deflection was enough to keep the scores tie earlier in the match.
As such, this win snaps what had become a two-match winless streak for Villa putting them just within touching distance of the top five, whilst Leicester’s struggles continue with their fifth defeat in a row.
The Foxes still battling defensive issues in their Premier League campaign. There was no clean sheet for them again, which means it is their 13th straight league contest where they have not managed to keep the opposition out.
This worrying development sees them joint with rock-bottom Southampton for the unwanted title of having the division’s leakiest defense following the concession of a remarkable 44 goals in 20 matches.
With just 14 points to their name, the Foxes sit 19th in the Premier League but will be hoping for a change in fortune when they face Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup third round this Saturday. Aston Villa, meanwhile, who are enjoying a far more successful season with 32 points, will visit West Ham United on Friday.
